2018 South Australian Training Awards
Category: Industry Collaboration Award
Award: Winner
WINNER of the 2018 SA Training Awards Industry Collaboration Award for the U-Turn Construction Pathways program run within the Adelaide Women's Prison. The Industry Collaboration Award recognises exemplary skills development collaboration between at least one employer or industry body and at least one organisation delivering nationally recognised training.
Through the upgrade of an existing accommodation block at the Adelaide Women’s Prison, female prisoners have had the opportunity to take part in the U-Turn program and gain skills and experience on a real construction site working alongside professional contractors whilst receiving industry accredited training. The aim of the program is to give participants the chance to be a productive team member on a real construction project. By increasing their confidence and self-esteem levels, U-Turn encourages women towards job opportunities in the construction industry and a positive future upon their release from prison. Four participants have transitioned into the workforce, with more to follow. U-Turn has created links with the community, establishing a network of pathway employers who recognise the benefit of the program and the valuable skills the women have gained through their involvement. U-Turn will continue to evolve and expand its reach, making a real difference for women released from prison, their children and families, and for our community.
